Customising Board Themes

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 5:00 PM

Themes allow you to group tasks by organisation goals or large focus areas. In the case of Agile boards, they can also be used to represent epics or swimlanes to group tasks that relate to the same, larger body of work.

As an example, if you're running a Customer Support Kanban board, you can use board themes to group the tasks by product areas, e.g. Onboarding, Client Access, etc. You could also use themes to group tasks by SLAs.

If you are running a development sprint board for a new commercial website, epics will help you break down large user stories into smaller stories. Examples of Epics could include Online Payment, Product Search, etc.

In this article, you will learn how to:

customise the Theme field name to better represent your business needs.

          create new themes.

Board settings page

You can customise board themes at the time of the board creation or by navigating to the Board settings page if the board already exists.

To access the board settings page, click on the Edit button on the top right of the board or backlog page.

NOTE: Only board owners can access the board settings page and customise themes.

Customising the theme field name

Below the basic board information is a field called Theme Name. The default name is set to Theme, but any preferred name can be used.

Type your preferred categorisation into the Theme Name field and hit enter.

You will notice when changing the Theme Name, the header and the ADD button on the theme section, at the bottom right of the page, will update automatically to reflect the new theme name.

Adding new themes

Click on the ADD button to start adding your own themes, selecting a unique colour for each. You can add as many themes as you need.

NOTE: that themes can be added, renamed or deleted at any time. Just navigate back to the board settings page to make the changes you need.
